(Photo: Pixabay) Doctors in France have found the first evidence that a drug normally used to treat lung, kidney or skin cancer may be able to eradicate HIV-infected cells in people with the AIDS virus.In a case described as potentially exciting by scientists who also advised caution, doctors said a 51-year old man given nivolumab - sold as Opdivo by Bristol-Myers Squibb - saw a “drastic and persistent decrease” in the reservoirs of cells where HIV normally hides away and evades standard treatments.The case, at the Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital AP-HP in Paris, was detailed in a report in the Annals of Oncology journal, where the same doctors also gave a case study of another patient treated with Opdivo who did not show any HIV benefit.“We must remain careful, especially because this is only one case,” said Jean-Philippe Spano, a professor and head of the medical oncology department at the Paris hospital. “This is the first case of such a drastic decrease of the HIV reservoir (but) we have...another case where there was no decrease.”Some 37 million people worldwide have the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes AIDS. These reservoirs of HIV-infected cells are found in the immune system in places like the brain, bone marrow and genital tract. They lie hidden and dormant, and can’t be reached with standard anti-retroviral therapy HIV treatments.If standard treatment is stopped or interrupted, the reservoirs seize the chance and the virus starts to replicate and infect more cells, rendering the patient’s immune system too weak to fight back.“Increasingly, researchers have been looking into the use of certain drugs that appear to re-activate the latent HIV-infected cells,” Spano said. “This could have the effect of making them visible to the immune system, which could then attack them.”Opdivo, or nivolumab is a PD-1 inhibitor, designed to help the body’s own immune system fend off cancer by blocking a protein called PD-1. It is one of several cancer immunotherapy drugs made by drugmakers including Merck, Roche and AstraZeneca that work in similar way.In this case, the 51-year-old man had received 31 injections of nivolumab every 14 days since December 2016.

Indian-American computer scientist Anshumali Shrivastava (Photo: Rice University) Houston: An Indian-American computer scientist has won National Science Foundation&conveyor belts Suppliers39;s prestigious CAREER award for his # research on redesigning current machine-learning processes.Anshumali Shrivastava was one of the recipients of the CAREER awards given to about 400 scholars each year across all disciplines to support the research and educational development of young scholars likely to become leaders in their fields."My research leverages the existing algorithmic advances for pushing machine learning to the extreme scale," said Shrivastava, an assistant professor of computer science at Rice university.Shrivastava hopes to come up with clever algorithmic strategies to enable faster, more scalable computations required by big data and machine-learning technologies.

I design 'hashing and sketching algorithms', a class of randomised algorithms that can process humongous data sets in seconds. Most of the machine-learning algorithms still in use were developed from the 1960s through the 1980s," he said."They were not designed with computational complexity in mind. They focused on finding the 'right' measurements from the data. Most of the measurements are now quite expensive to compute. With big data, we're realising that standard techniques fail to address new constraints of computations, energy, memory and other resources," he said.Shrivastava earned an integrated MS and BS in mathematics and computing from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 2008 and a PhD in computer science from Cornell University in 2015, the same year he joined the Rice faculty."Can we redesign current machine-learning processes that rely only on operations that are efficient and do not affect the outputs significantly? That is the central question in my research," he said.CAREER awards are the National Science Foundation's most prestigious awards exemplifying the role of teacher-scholars through research, education and the integration of education and research. The award comes with a federal grant for research and education activities for five consecutive years.

Maru was attending to an elderly relative who had come for an MRI scan to the hospital. Rajesh Maru Mumbai: In a freak accident, a man got sucked into a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine and died at Mumbai’s civic-run Nair Hospital on Saturday night.In a case of alleged medical negligence, the incident occurred minutes after Rajesh Shyamji Maru (32) walked into the room carrying an oxygen cylinder, even though metal objects are not allowed inside MRI-testing rooms because of the magnetic field it creates when operational.The family alleged that it was a China automatic liquid soft packaging machines Suppliers case of negligence on the part of the hospital staff as a ward boy attached to the MRI section had allegedly asked them to carry the oxygen cylinder inside, assuring that it was safe as the machine was switched off, only it wasn’t.Maru died as he had inhaled excess oxygen after the cylinder’s knob accidentally opened even as his body got sucked inside the MRI machine. Maru was attending to an elderly relative who had come for an MRI scan to the hospital.The Agripada police has filed a case under section 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and arrested three hospital staff members, including the ward boy.DCP Virendra Mishra of Zone 3 said, “An FIR was registered against the hospital and they have arrested the doctor, Saurabh Lanjekar (24), ward boy Vitthal Chavan (35) and ward attendant Sunita Surve under Section 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC.”  The hospital authorities have also handed over the CCTV footage of the incident to the police. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnvis announced a compensation of `5 lakhs for the family of the victim.When asked about alleged negligence on the part of the hospital’s staff, that resulted in the oxygen cylinder being allowed inside the MRI room, Nair Hospital Dean Dr Ramesh Bharmal said, “It’s a sad and tragic accident.

The police are investigating the case.” He added, “In the process of shifting the patient from a regular stretcher to the MRI stretcher, there was no place meant for the oxygen cylinder. Accidentally, the oxygen cylinder also went inside along with the person and he died.”Maru was a resident of Lalbaug and the sole bread earner of his family. He had gone to the hospital to visit his sister’s mother-in-law Laxmiben Solanki ( 62), who was ailing with fever. Maru, who worked as a salesman, was helping Solanki get inside the MRI room, when a ward boy asked him to take her oxygen cylinder inside.Talking to The Asian Age, the deceased’s uncle Jaysingh Maru said, This is total negligence by the hospital.

On National Sewing Machine Day, i.e 13th June, Narayan Seva Sansthan inaugurated Narayan Sewing Training Center for differently abled in partnership with Skill India Team, where they will be undergoing 30 to 45 days hands-on training on sewing machines backed up by training team from Narayan Seva Sansthan. In this sector, government is already facilitating demand-driven skilling and upskilling programs through Samarth (Scheme for Capacity Building in the Textile Sector) for sustainable employment. Industry requires skill upgradation in the traditional sectors like handlooms, handicrafts, sericulture, and jute. According to India’s female Labor Force Participation Rate (LFPR), which includes working-age women employed and the ones who are looking for jobs, the rate has fallen to a short of 23.3 per cent in 2017-18.

The foremost reason behind this decline is because of having household responsibilities like taking care of their children, etc.As reported by the industry experts, there is a need to emphasize on fulfilling skill shortage and rise in rate of unemployed youth in the country. Currently, with technology integration with Sewing machines, these machines are capable of doing myriad of sewing styles, quilting, and embroidery.
